The WWE Universe got a surprise shake-up this week as Ava — real name Simone Johnson, and daughter of Hollywood icon and WWE legend Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — has officially stepped away from WWE, announcing that she will not be renewing her contract.

Ava took to social media to share the news with fans, confirming that this past week’s episode of WWE NXT was her final appearance under the WWE banner. In a heartfelt statement, she thanked the community for their support and reflected on what her time in the company has meant to her:

“This past Tuesday was my last appearance on NXT & subsequently WWE. Thank you to all who have cheered, watched, and supported me through my journey. While my decision to not renew my contract was very difficult, it’s also a new turning point in my life. It has been an honor & a privilege to be Ava.”

A Trailblazing Path in WWE

Ava’s journey with WWE began back in February 2020, when she signed with the company’s Performance Center. Her signing made history — she became the first fourth-generation wrestler in WWE history, carrying forward a legacy that spans some of the sport’s most iconic families.

She made her televised debut on NXT in October 2022 as part of the faction The Schism, using the ring name Ava Raine before later simplifying it to just Ava. What followed was a unique — if sometimes unconventional — path in the squared circle: she competed in a select handful of matches, made memorable appearances, and ultimately transitioned into a major leadership role.

In January 2024, Ava stepped into the role of General Manager of NXT, becoming one of the youngest figures to ever hold that on-screen position. Her leadership helped usher in new storylines and moments, including overseeing the launch of the NXT Women’s North American Championship at Stand & Deliver 2024.

Why This Matters

Ava’s decision not to renew her WWE contract marks the end of a significant chapter — not only in her personal journey but also in the evolution of NXT. For years, fans watched her navigate a unique collision of legacy, expectations, and opportunity. Now, as she steps away from WWE, the question on everyone’s mind is: what’s next?

Will she:

  • pursue further opportunities in wrestling outside of WWE?

  • explore roles in Hollywood or other entertainment fields?

  • or blaze an entirely new trail unrelated to sports entertainment?

Only time will tell, but one thing’s clear — Ava’s journey is far from over.

Closing Thoughts

While her WWE tenure may have had highs and lows, Ava’s departure is a reminder that even storied legacies evolve. Her exit opens the door to fresh starts and untapped potential — and for many fans, that’s something to watch with excitement.
