Chelsea Green’s championship run has hit an unexpected setback.

Newly crowned Interim WWE Women’s Champion Chelsea Green has confirmed that she suffered a broken orbital bone during the August 7 episode of WWE SmackDown. Green revealed that the injury was serious enough to send her to the emergency room following the show.

The injury comes less than a week after Green captured the Interim WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam, making the timing especially unfortunate for one of WWE’s hottest stars.

Green Injured During SmackDown Tag Match

Green competed alongside Tiffany Stratton against Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid on Friday’s episode of SmackDown. Reports following the show indicated that Green had been injured during the match before she subsequently confirmed the extent of the damage herself.

Speaking about the situation on Instagram, Green explained that injuries are an occupational hazard of professional wrestling and confirmed she went to the emergency room, where she learned she had fractured her orbital bone.

Green also made it clear that the setback has been frustrating, saying she needs some time to process what happened and determine what comes next.

Terrible Timing for Chelsea Green

The injury couldn't have come at a much worse moment.

Green had just captured the Interim WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam, giving her another major accomplishment after previously becoming the inaugural WWE Women’s United States Champion. Her latest championship victory appeared positioned to launch

Green into an even bigger role within WWE's women's division.

Now the immediate question becomes whether the orbital fracture will force Green to miss significant time.

As of now, WWE has not announced that Green will vacate the championship, and a definitive timetable for her in-ring return has not been publicly established. The severity and treatment of the injury will ultimately determine how quickly she can safely return.

That distinction is important: a broken orbital bone does not automatically mean a lengthy absence, so any speculation about WWE creating another interim champion or stripping Green of the title would be premature.

Another Blow to WWE's Women's Championship Picture

The situation creates an unusual problem for WWE considering Green herself became Interim Women's Champion because of the existing uncertainty surrounding the championship picture.

Losing the interim champion — even temporarily — could force WWE to adjust creative plans depending on how long Green is sidelined.

For now, however, the focus is on Green's recovery.

After finally reaching another major milestone at SummerSlam, hopefully this proves to be only a short interruption rather than the end of her championship reign.

Grapple News will provide updates as additional information regarding Chelsea Green's condition and WWE status becomes available.
